BIO // EMELIE BERGH

I am influenced by an overwhelming need for change. For the past few years my work has been focused on bringing awareness to problems facing our environment and I work desperately to spread knowledge while conserving what I can. On most occasions, my thoughts take the form of garments while on other days I work creating installations, experience-based and interactive projects, and 2D representations. Each garment is conceptualized through a deep emotional connection to nature and acts as an exploration to further understand what is happening to the planet.

Each collection is an abstracted response to different environmental events consisting of garments with multiple layers of meaning and symbolization. The pieces merge the beauty of intricate details with the harsh realities of climate change to make the viewer uncomfortable and spark conversation. The fabrication of each garment is carefully and mindfully considered. Fibers and fabrics are organic, harm-free, and sourced as locally as possible. Textiles are created by hand painting or dyeing the fabric with natural and low impact dyes. The hand of the maker is prominent through continuous embroidery stitch marks, detailed pleating, and brushed wax. The focus of my work is preserving the earth and creating a change in the way we make clothes. My goal is to spread a message of sustainability and discover ways to disrupt an industry.
